Like electricity, social media has tremendous power. The power therein could be used positively or negatively depending on the user. Social media do not dictate to us how best to use them. The users, being you and I, determine how best to put them to use.How has the advent of social media affected us negatively? Let’s take a look at a few of them.
1. A thief of time
According to a report published on social media by Nielsen, a leading global information and measurement company, which provides market research, insights and data about what people watch and buy, it is reported that the average person who browses the internet spends about 22.5% of their total internet time on social networks.
Another report also suggests that a third of young adults use social media in the bathroom. These reports indicate how much attached people have become to social media. From the time we wake up till we retire to bed, social media become a very close ally.
It is not wrong to spend some time on social media to hook up with friends and loved ones. It however becomes worrying when they steal valuable time that could have been used in more profitable ventures. How much time do you spend on social media daily? Have a time frame to browse your social media pages and log out. Don’t meddle work with social media as many people are found doing in offices. Discipline is the watch word!
2. A dent on one’s image
There was so much brouhaha concerning the appointment of one of Ghana’s female deputy ministers some time ago, and prominent among some of the accusations rained on her as her being unfit for the public post was the “provocative” images she was reported to have posted of herself on her social media pages long before her appointment.
This goes without saying that our activities on social media have the tendency to dent our image in the very near future, if not now. The pictures we upload of ourselves, the statuses we update, and the comments we post daily are representative of the image we portray to the world.
Unfortunately, this image – good or bad – becomes deeply ingrained in the minds of our readers that it may require only a powerful detergent to erase them, if not impossible. If you want to develop a good image, develop the attitude of posting the right materials. Otherwise, you may live to regret it someday.
3. “Electronic rather than personal relationships
The one aspect of social media that makes it so appealing is the fact that it brings people on a single platform where they track one another’s activities as though they’re in a common physical location. However helpful this has been, it is slowly eating into our culture of running and maintaining “electronic” relationships rather than a more personal and intimate one.
I have on a number of occasions cancelled a physical face-to-face meeting with friends just so we could meet on Skype or Facebook to chat. No matter how similar they may be, nothing can replace an intimate face-to-face meeting where we get to meet and have physical contact. Hook up with friends all you can on social media. But most importantly, make some time to meet up with them physically. That physical touch can be compared to nothing.
4. An avenue for scam
Of course, no one invented social media to make it serve as a medium for scam and other unscrupulous activities. However, people have recently used these platforms in a very negative way where they send messages claiming to show interest in their recipients.
This is one of the greatest challenges social media users are bedevilled with. Now, it is no wonder to visit your Facebook page and find a message in your inbox that may read along these lines;
“Hello, nice to meet you. My name is so, so and so. I saw your profile and picked interest to contact you. I’ve something very important which I would love to share with you. Therefore, I would appreciate it if you respond back to me through this email (then they give a certain email address), and I will write you back with my full details with more pictures.”
Let us not fall victims to these scams, they have nothing on offer!
I hope you have gleaned some knowledge having followed this series on social media. Like any source of power, it has the ability to build or destroy. USE SOCIAL MEDIA WISELY!!!
